The best stories don’t land in your inbox.

They’re discovered over coffee with a community partner. During a conversation with a volunteer. While listening to a parent, a teacher, or an ALICE worker share what life is really like.

At United Way of Northern New York, we’re looking for someone who understands that storytelling begins with relationships.

Yes, you’ll create social media posts, write news releases, update our website, and develop marketing materials. But your most important work will happen when you step outside the office, build trust in the community, and uncover stories that inspire people to get involved.

If you’re curious, creative, and believe every person has a story worth telling, we’d love to meet you.

Check out this video message from our CEO to learn more.

About the Role

We’re a small but mighty team that LIVES UNITED every day.

That means we wear many hats, support one another, celebrate successes together, and aren’t afraid to jump in wherever we’re needed. One day you might be interviewing a volunteer at a community event. The next, you’re creating a fundraising campaign, updating the website, designing a brochure, or helping coordinate one of our signature events.

No two days look exactly alike, and that’s one of the things we love about this work.

What You’ll Bring

We’re looking for someone who combines creativity with follow-through. Someone who enjoys dreaming up new ideas but also has the organizational skills to turn those ideas into reality.

You’ll thrive in this role if you:

  • Love writing and telling stories.
  • Build relationships easily and enjoy meeting new people.
  • Can manage multiple projects without losing sight of the details.
  • Enjoy both strategy and hands-on execution.
  • Are comfortable representing United Way throughout Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence Counties.
  • Believe meaningful work is built on collaboration, curiosity, and compassion.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates should have:

  • Three or more years of experience in marketing, communications, public relations, or a related field.
  • An associate’s or bachelor’s degree in a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong writing, editing, and communication skills.
  • Experience creating content for social media, websites, email, print, and other digital platforms.
  • Experience with Canva, Microsoft Office, and common social media platforms.
  • Experience with WordPress or similar website platforms is helpful.
  • Event planning or project coordination experience is a plus.
