We are proud to spotlight Literacy of Northern New York, a longtime United Way partner that helps adults build reading, writing, and English-language skills to achieve employment, independence, and stronger connections to community life.

With help from United Way donors, Literacy of NNY provides free, one-on-one tutoring and small-group instruction to adults across Jefferson and Lewis Counties. Last year, adult learners achieved tangible milestones, from gaining employment and earning driver’s licenses to enrolling in college and becoming U.S. citizens. The organization leverages more than $200,000 in volunteer tutoring annually to deliver free, individualized instruction that changes lives.

“Literacy is at the foundation of opportunity,” said Dawn Cole, President & CEO of United Way of Northern New York. “When adults strengthen their literacy and language skills, they strengthen their families, workplaces, and communities. That’s the kind of change made possible through United Way support.”

Cecilia Brock, Executive Director of Literacy of Northern New York, added, “We see firsthand the transformation that happens when adults gain confidence in their abilities. Every learner’s success story begins with community support, and United Way donors make that possible.”

In 2026, United Way of Northern New York will invest more than $325,000 in programs that promote health and wellness, support child and youth success, and strengthen economic stability across Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence Counties, including $230,000 in Community Impact grants guided by a volunteer review process that ensures every donor dollar makes the greatest difference.  Monies to support United Way’s programming and grant-making efforts are generated through the annual campaign, now underway across the tri-county region. Gifts to the Community Impact Fund sustain life-changing programs like adult education, workforce development, and youth success initiatives. Eligible donors who give through their workplace will be automatically entered into prize drawings, including a living room set courtesy of Massey’s Furniture Barn.
