Our chapter is a member of United Way Worldwide and sanctioned by the national office as a United Way affiliate. However, each of the more than 1,200 chapters in the country is run under the auspices of a local volunteer board of directors. Their names are listed on the United Way website.
The Northern New York chapter has a four-person administrative staff.
The United Way raises money and then provides grants to 40 nonprofits in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties. Money raised in each county stays in each county.
Local volunteers review program requests and prior year results in deciding new grants. The review process helps eliminate program duplication, and ensures that the money being spent has a positive effect on our region’s health and well-being.
Any local not-for-profit providing a useful, unduplicated human service is eligible to partner with United Way.

Any gift is the right gift. All gifts are valued and together they add up to meet community need.

However, payroll deduction gifts made each year – many for as little as $1 a week – make up the bulk of funds raised by the United Way.
